Tryptophan is an essential amino acid. It is important in inducing sleep, increase duration of sleep and improving quality of sleep. It can raise the pain threshold and has an antidepressant effect. It can inhibit insulin release, raise blood sugar and decrease appetite. Tryptophan deficient diets cause Pellagra which is characterized by dermatitis, diarrhea and dementia since it is a precursor of niacin. It is beneficial in some forms of schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease.
